Betta (Siamese Fighting Fish)
Bettas breathe air through a labyrinth organ, giving them access to tanks with lower oxygen — but they still need a heated, cycled tank, not a bowl.

Neon Tetra
The classic community centerpiece. Neons need soft, mature water and behave best in shoals of 8+ where their blue-red flash is mesmerizing.

Angelfish
Angels grow tall — tank height matters as much as length. They pair-bond and become protective, so plan the community carefully.

Corydoras Catfish

Clownfish (Ocellaris)
Captive-bred clownfish are hardy first saltwater fish. They don't require an anemone but pair beautifully with certain leathers.

Aquarium care essentials
The nitrogen cycle takes 4–6 weeks. Fish-less cycling with ammonia protects future stock and prevents 'new tank syndrome'.
Larger volumes buffer mistakes. Beginners fail most in 5-gallon tanks and succeed in 40-gallon community setups.
A liquid test for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH replaces guesswork. Strips are OK for maintenance, not diagnosis.
Fish stomachs are the size of their eye. Feed what they'll finish in 60 seconds, once or twice a day.
The Nitrogen Cycle, simplified
Fish waste → ammonia → nitrite → nitrate. Beneficial bacteria grow on your filter and substrate to break down each step. Skip the cycle and your fish die of ammonia poisoning within a week.
- 1Set up the tank fully — substrate, plants, filter running.
- 2Add pure ammonia (Dr Tim's) to 2–4 ppm.
- 3Wait for ammonia → nitrite conversion (days 3–14).
- 4Wait for nitrite → nitrate conversion (days 14–28).
- 5Do a 50% water change and add your first small stock.
- 6Test weekly for a month. Add fish gradually.
