A world of feathers.

From cheerful budgies to loquacious African Greys — species profiles, diets, cage sizing and enrichment guides.

Fundamentals

Bird care essentials

Pellets are the baseline

Seed-only diets cause fatty liver and vitamin deficiency. Pellets should be 60–70% of most parrot diets.

Non-stick pans can kill birds

PTFE fumes from overheated Teflon are lethal within minutes. Switch to stainless or ceramic if you have birds.

Foraging beats bowl-feeding

Wild parrots spend 6+ hours a day finding food. Foraging toys prevent boredom-driven feather picking.

Sleep matters

Most parrots need 10–12 hours of dark, quiet sleep. Cover the cage or use a sleep cage in a separate room.

Before you bring one home

Life with a parrot — realistic checklist

Parrots are wild animals we happen to keep. Their needs are enormous — read this list before adopting.

  • 3+ hours of daily out-of-cage time
  • Zero Teflon / non-stick pans in the home
  • Weekly toy rotation and foraging setups
  • Pellet-based diet with fresh chop
  • Annual avian vet exam + gram stains
  • 10–12 hours of dark, quiet sleep
  • Second-hand smoke and aerosols are fatal
  • Plan for their long lifespan in your will
